OUR PLAN

We are writing this blog for one reason and one reason only. To provide a vehicle to make it easier to remain in touch with our family and friends back home.

Our plan is simple. Depart our home port of Goderich, Ontario in the Summer of 2011. Cruise Georgian Bay and the North Channel of Lake Huron while visiting some of the ports and anchorages we have missed over the years. As well as revisiting some of our favourite haunts hopefully with some of our very good friends with whom we have cruised with many times before. All the while adding up the miles and gaining experience with our new trawler. Our first and only self imposed deadline is to be in the Chicago area around Labour Day. South of Chicago, weather and circumstances will guide us!

AUGUST 16,2011 - LONG POINT COVE,ONT. TO DRUMMOND ISLAND YACHT HAVEN, MI. USA.

For some reason it was a restless night. The weather man had changed the forecast enough times to drive a drunken sailor sober. But the 0500 forecast said go. I woke Terri up about 0550 and we listened together and by 0555 we were in high gear making preps to up the anchor and be gone. By 0630 the anchor was up to the water line but there was so much heavy clay mud on it the wash down pump would not clear it. I had to use a boat hook and work like a dog to clean it. This clay would have made great pits for an Elmira Horseshoe Tournament of old. After about 10 minutes of dragging it through the water and poking at it with a boat hook I did manage to clean it. The balance of the trip was rather uneventful other than we allowed ourselves a short 30 minute run at full speed for it is good for the diesel to be worked hard once in a while. We arrived at about 1230 and were met by a friendly staff member who helped us dock. He promised to send the Customs Officer around to see us soon. No problem says I as we are fully prepared and have all of our documentation in order. Just ask Ter -  lol. After a short while the officer does come around and does his duty. He didn’t care about anything except how many people were on board and if we were hiding any aliens. Smudge and her papers were not even thought of. The officer and his big side arm was very nice to us.
