OUR PLAN

We are writing this blog for one reason and one reason only. To provide a vehicle to make it easier to remain in touch with our family and friends back home.

Our plan is simple. Depart our home port of Goderich, Ontario in the Summer of 2011. Cruise Georgian Bay and the North Channel of Lake Huron while visiting some of the ports and anchorages we have missed over the years. As well as revisiting some of our favourite haunts hopefully with some of our very good friends with whom we have cruised with many times before. All the while adding up the miles and gaining experience with our new trawler. Our first and only self imposed deadline is to be in the Chicago area around Labour Day. South of Chicago, weather and circumstances will guide us!

AUGUST 14,2011 - JOHN ISLAND TO LONG POINT COVE

Today dawned bright with the promise that we shall be released from the confines of the boat. So after breakfast I lowered the dinghy and we are off exploring. This is a huge anchorage and there is a lot to see if you want. We went over to Brian and Lynne and had a quick chat with them. They have a minor case of cabin fever like us I think. They are at their turn around point and from here on they will be travelling East and then South back home to Goderich. We bid them adieu and continue our exploring. A small power boat could really hunker down here as there are so many different places to hide. Sadly we must push on and make a mental note to return here someday. We leave about midday for the short 4 mile trip to Long Point Cove. When we get there we are surprised to see only one other boat. This is a very small anchorage though so it is probably a good thing. We anchor in 6 feet of water, and know that is not a typo. We want a good set on the anchor and I feel that we have it so am happy with a very short scope. If everybody used the recommended scope in here the place would be a boating demolition derby.  There appears to be no need for long scope as this harbour is very protected and we expect only benign weather. Before long there are another 3 boats here and all seemed to be happy with their position in the cove.

ENTERING LONG POINT COVE, ONTARIO
Again we drop the Dinghy into he water and all board for a tour and a hike on a small island. We have not been on dry land for a few days so Terra firma is indeed welcome. I suggest to Terri that she let Smudge run free and to my surprise she does just that. You see, Smudge has a well-earned reputation as a runner and slow to return. But we are on an island and she can go nowhere. She just loves it and even comes to us when we command. Maybe she is learning something and the puppy stage is more behind her than ahead of her. We shall see.

 DAY IS DONE!

SUNSET REFLECTING ON THE SHORE
We get back to the boat in the late afternoon and I go for a quick swim. Even Terri takes the plunge and does her laps around the boat with me. The sun is getting lower and is very hot right now so we set up chairs on the swim platform and prepare with cocktail in hand to watch the changing scenery as the boat swings. What a glorious hour! But all too soon it is time to make dinner preps and I head off to the galley to perform some kind of trick. BBQ steak it will be tonight. While I am preparing the dinner Terri calls the girls and her mom to bring everybody up to speed. I had called my mom earlier in the day to do the same thing. Terri leaves messages at all of the numbers and soon she is happily chatting to someone who has returned the call.
Dinner is served around 1830 hours and not long after dinner I am dead to the world.
