Welcome to Paradise!
It was a blessing in disguise, when Pilot House Marina could not honour
our reservation. Just around the corner from Pilot House, we
headed into the Key Largo channel, with our destination at the foot of the
basin. Because of all the boat traffic
using the very narrow channel, security calls were advised upon entering, and
again prior to “crash corner” (aptly named for a 90 degree turn with blind
spots).
Easy decision to stay a month after getting settled and
learning boaters had the use of 4 pools (one with a tiki bar), exercise room,
free continental breakfast every morning, free mobile pump out and central to
park and Publix as well as numerous restaurants within biking distance!
Maybe a little too good to be true, the mobile pump out boat
“crapped out” and was unavailable for 3 weeks!
We asked the harbour master what their plan B was and much to our
dismay, they only had plan A. We were
s..t out of luck! Oh well, back to Pilot
House Marina when our tanks reached their fill.
When Mark inquired if they were really busy because of the disabled pump-out
boat, they shrugged and said "no increase in business". H-m-m-m-m, don’t want to think about where
“it” was all going.
Despite the glitch of a non-operational pump-out boat we had
a very enjoyable stay. Smudge took us
for lots of walks in the glorious sunshine and we enjoyed being entertained
watching all the tour, dive(Key Largo is said to be the dive capital of the
world) and fishing boats running in and out of the channel from our fly bridge
in the afternoons.
This location is a popular spot for boaters escaping the
harsh northern temperatures for the winter and many are repeat guests. A couple of pot luck dinners were organized and
we enjoyed meeting the other boaters.
John and Darleen from the catamaran Island Rhum shared with us their
favorite spots and tips when they travelled along the eastern United States
from Michigan to Florida and back 7 times.
Thank you for these information nuggets John and Darleen! Personal
experience is always appreciated. We
also enjoyed a little deja vu , going sailing over the famous coral reefs on
your beautiful cat.
