OUR PLAN

We are writing this blog for one reason and one reason only. To provide a vehicle to make it easier to remain in touch with our family and friends back home.

Our plan is simple. Depart our home port of Goderich, Ontario in the Summer of 2011. Cruise Georgian Bay and the North Channel of Lake Huron while visiting some of the ports and anchorages we have missed over the years. As well as revisiting some of our favourite haunts hopefully with some of our very good friends with whom we have cruised with many times before. All the while adding up the miles and gaining experience with our new trawler. Our first and only self imposed deadline is to be in the Chicago area around Labour Day. South of Chicago, weather and circumstances will guide us!

FEBRUARY 21-MARCH 1,2013- FORT LAUDERDALE, FL

We are very excited to be travelling into the “Yachting Capital of the World”, Fort Lauderdale, FL., specifically the New River downtown.  We were advised by many people who have visited by boat that it is a stop that should not be missed and they were right (white knuckle right!)   Bustling with every size and shape boat imaginable, coupled with the Miami boat show just dispersing, and a very narrow river with huge currents, high winds, low bridges….well you get the picture.  Certainly not the best time to lose both bow and stern thrusters!!!  Yup, that’s us!  Luckily our guardian angels were with us and Captain Mark worked the throttle like his life depended on it.  With a little help from Diane (Kama Kat) who just happened to be docked on the wall with a birds-eye view, Terrmar came to rest safely in her assigned slip, while condo dwellers observing from above applauded!

So, boat repairs were on the agenda for the hot days that followed.  Interesting how things happen.  Turns out that the thruster problems stemmed from the thruster motor being half submerged in water since brand new.  Mark remembered that we had the boat plumbed for a water maker that we never did install, but someone forgot to put a plug in the end of the pipe which ended up dripping water into the cockpit locker exactly where the thruster motor was located.  OK, we know what the problem is, now to fix it.  Long story short, after a very sweaty and frustrating taxi ride, Mark found a repair shop that agreed to speed the motor repair after Mark gave the guy a little “grease”.  Captain Mark was able to finally install the refurbished motor and Terrmar was good to go again!

We did manage to find time to smell the roses in this very busy place and even had a visit from friends Glenn and Solange from Canada who winter nearby.
