Whew! Going from the
lazy, scenic Dismal Swamp Canal to the wide-open, busy, congested Norfolk, VA
harbour woke us up in a hurry. This is a
US Navy seaport and the evidence was everywhere! We docked at Waterside Marina right in the
heart of downtown Norfolk. Smudge loved
walking in the beautiful Norfolk waterfront park and we were amused by the
mermaid sculptures scattered around the city.
We decided to tour the USS Wisconsin, a battleship
commissioned in the 1940’s, which served in WW2, the Korean War and Desert
Storm and presently is being restored as a museum. The volunteer tour guides (former service
men) gave informative and credible accounts of life aboard a battleship and how
the ship and the men adapted with changing times and advancing technology.
The following day, we were fortunate to be able to get a
quick ferry ride across the Elizabeth River to Portsmouth, VA to visit dear
friends Bonnie and Charlie from platinum looper boat “Sonata”. It had been a year since we had cruised
together and was really great to catch up with them. Thanks so much for all your cruising
tips! Too soon it was time to say
goodbye and we were on the water once again heading north.
