OUR PLAN

We are writing this blog for one reason and one reason only. To provide a vehicle to make it easier to remain in touch with our family and friends back home.

Our plan is simple. Depart our home port of Goderich, Ontario in the Summer of 2011. Cruise Georgian Bay and the North Channel of Lake Huron while visiting some of the ports and anchorages we have missed over the years. As well as revisiting some of our favourite haunts hopefully with some of our very good friends with whom we have cruised with many times before. All the while adding up the miles and gaining experience with our new trawler. Our first and only self imposed deadline is to be in the Chicago area around Labour Day. South of Chicago, weather and circumstances will guide us!

NOV 8-9,2011- COLUMBUS, MS TO SUMTER LANDING, AL

We were able to get a good start out of Columbus Marina, anticipating just 2 locks today.  On our travels today we passed the historical US Snag boat, Montgomery which was the last steam-powered stern wheeler operating in southern waters keeping the rivers navigable.  It was finally retired in 1982.

ANCHOR SET AT SUMTER LANDING

LOTS TO SEE

We arrived at Sumter Landing anchorage by mid afternoon under warm sunny skies.  We watched the sun set and decided to stay the next day in this beautiful peaceful place.  Good plan, as it turned out, the weather turned cooler and rainy, but by midday the sun was shining again and all boats that spent the previous night at the same anchorage had decided to carry on down the river.  An anchorage all to ourselves – awesome!  Was great to be able to put the dinghy in the water and explore.  Mark decided to first take Smudge for a ride and then go out to the river by himself to “open it up and give it a good run”.  Maybe not such a good idea going 30 miles/hour on the river in overcast skies, all  alone, I commented.    “No worries, I’ll be fine”, he said with a glint in his eyes.  No use arguing and off he went as I said a little prayer.   As soon as he reached the river, the skies opened and it poured!!  He was back in a flash looking like a drowned rat but blackberry still unharmed!    Later in the day looper boats, The Cooper and Gemini appeared with plenty of room for them and more.   We all settled down for another peaceful night at anchor and ready for an early departure the next morning as we head to Demopolis, Alabama.
